An accomplished architect, Koehler discovered his passion for oil painting in recent years. He prefers to paint en plein air in order to capture the essence of landscape. Koehler breaks a scene into simplified, abstracted lines, shapes, and planes. He explores the effects of color and light, a fascination shared by American Impressionists. Whether using lively broken brushstrokes, or longer, smooth and rhythmic strokes, Koehler paints familiar places in Ohio and Michigan with nobility and tranquility. Koehler’s confident draftsmanship is rooted in his training as an architect, but his painterly vision relies on the emotion of place.
