Competition Rules

Paint Grand Traverse, presented by Crooked Tree Arts Center, is a week-long plein air painting festival and competition located in Traverse City, Michigan and its neighboring counties. It will be held August 12-18, 2018. Over the course of the event, artists will paint in various locations throughout the area in preparation for a gala celebration and wet paint sale on Saturday, August 18. Additionally, there will be a "Small Wonders" sale and competition on Tuesday, August 14; and a Quick Draw sale and competition on Wednesday, August 15.


Tuesday, August 14: Small Wonders Competition

Who will participate: the invited featured artists listed here.

Number of pieces: 1-3

Artwork specifications:

  • Canvas/paper will be stamped at the artist check-in event on Sunday, August 12 from 6:00-7:30pm.
  • Small wonders are not to exceed 8" on longest side (excluding frame), and should be framed or matted.
  • Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life.
  • All paintings must begin on a white or toned background.
  • Artwork must be signed.
  • Work must remain on display until 8:30pm.

Turn in: Tuesday, August 14 from 5:00-6:00pm at Bonobo Winery, Old Mission Peninsula. A small work table with basic framing tools and blank labels will be provided at the venue.

Pick up: unsold work must be picked up on site from 8:30-9:30pm. Abandoned artwork will become property of Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Sale event: VIP reception at Bonobo Winery, Old Mission Peninsula. Tuesday, August 14 from 6:30-8:30pm.

Sales:

  • Artists set the prices. Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission.
  • CTAC staff will process sales; checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 15, 2018.
  • Prices are non-negotiable.
  • Selling artwork outside of the Paint Grand Traverse event is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event.

Awards:

  • The awards juror is Duncan Campbell, president of the Scarab Club.
  • First place $250; three honorable mentions valued at $100 each.

Wednesday, August 15: Quick Draw Competition

Who will participate: the invited featured artists listed here, and other artists who have pre-registered. The field will total 100 artists.

Number of pieces: 1

Painting time: 4:00-6:00pm (2 hours)

Artwork specifications:

  • Pieces on paper should be matted. Pieces on board or canvas do not need to be framed. (Piece must be able to stand on a table-top easel)
  • Maximum size: 24" on longest side.
  • All painting media are welcome.
  • Paintings must begin on a white or toned background.
  • Artwork must be signed.
  • Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life.
  • Work must remain on display until 8:30pm.

Turn in: by 6:15pm.

Pick up: unsold works must picked up on-site from 8:30-9:30pm. Abandoned artwork will become property of Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Sale event: a quick sale will immediately follow, starting around 6:45pm. This event is free and open to the public.

Sales:

  • Artists set the prices. Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission.
  • CTAC staff will process sales; checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 15, 2018.
  • Prices are non-negotiable.
  • Selling artwork outside of the Paint Grand Traverse event is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event.

Awards:

  • The awards jurors are Duncan Campbell, president of the Scarab Club; and Liz Erlewine, CTAC galleries director.
  • First place: $500; second place $250; (3) honorable mentions valued at $100 each.

Saturday, August 18: Paint Grand Traverse Gala & Sale

Who will participate: the invited featured artists listed here.

Number of pieces: 3-5

Artwork specifications:

  • Canvas/paper will be stamped at the artist check-in event on Sunday, August 12 from 6:00-7:30pm.
  • Must be wired for hanging and ready for display. No saw-tooth hangers. Unframed gallery-wrapped art must be at least 1" in depth and edges must be painted. Work on paper must be framed and under glass/plexiglass.
  • Frames should not exceed 4" in width.
  • Maximum length: 24" on longest side (excluding frame).
  • Artwork must be signed.
  • Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life.
  • All paintings must begin with a white or toned background.
  • Work must remain on display until 9:00pm, Saturday, August 18.

Turn in: Saturday, August 18 from 9:00am-1:00pm at Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Pick up: Saturday, August 18 from 9:00-10:00pm and Sunday, August 19 from 8:00am-12:00pm. Abandoned artwork will become property of Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Sale event: the Paint Grand Traverse Gala & Sale is a ticketed, public event, which includes a 6:00-7:00pm VIP preview hour, and the 7:00-9:00pm main event.

Sales:

  • Artists set the prices. Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission.
  • CTAC staff will process sales; checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 15, 2018.
  • Prices are non-negotiable.
  • Selling artwork outside of the Paint Grand Traverse event is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event.

Awards:

The awards juror is Ned Mueller.

  • First place: $2,500
  • Second place: $1,500
  • Third place: $1,000
  • Artist's Choice: $500
  • Three honorable mentions valued at $500 each
