Paint Grand Traverse, presented by Crooked Tree Arts Center, is a week-long plein air painting festival and competition located in Traverse City, Michigan and its neighboring counties. The third annual Paint Grand Traverse will be held August 8-15, 2020. Over the course of the event, artists will paint in various locations throughout the area in preparation for awards and sales events on August 14 and 15, 2020.
 


Wednesday, August 12: Quick Draw Competition

Who will participate: the invited featured artists, and other artists who have pre-registered. The field will total approximately 100 artists.

Number of pieces: 1

Painting time: 2 hours

Artwork specifications:

  • Canvas/paper will be stamped at check-in on August 11 and at the Quick Draw event.
  • Pieces on paper should be matted. Pieces on board or canvas do not need to be framed. (Piece must be able to stand on a table-top easel)
  • Maximum size: 24" on longest side.
  • All painting media are welcome.
  • Paintings must begin on a blank white or toned background.
  • Artwork must be signed.
  • Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life.
  • Work must remain on display until the conclusion of the event.

Pick up: unsold works must picked up on-site, immediately following the event. Abandoned artwork will become property of Crooked Tree Arts Center.

Sale event: an awards presentation and quick sale will immediately follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Sales:

  • Artists set the prices. Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission. The minimum retail price is $200.
  • CTAC staff will process sales; checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 30, 2020.
  • Prices are non-negotiable.
  • Selling artwork outside of the Paint Grand Traverse event is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event.

Friday, August 14: PGT Collectors Gala

Who will participate: the invited featured artists

Number of juried pieces: 5 (additional pieces may be displayed and sold, as space is available)

Artwork specifications:

  • Canvas/paper will be stamped at the artist check-in event on Saturday, August 8.
  • Must be wired for hanging and ready for display. No saw-tooth hangers. Unframed gallery-wrapped art must be at least 1" in depth and edges must be painted. Work on paper must be framed and under glass/plexiglass.
  • Frames should not exceed 4" in width.
  • Maximum length: 24" on longest side (excluding frame).
  • Artwork must be signed.
  • Work must be created solely by the artist and done completely from life.
  • All paintings must begin with a blank white or toned background.
  • Work must remain on display through the conclusion of the event.

Turn in: by Friday, August 14 at 11:00am. Work may also be turned into CTAC throughout the week.

Pick up: Sunday, August 16 from 9:00am-11:00am. Abandoned artwork will become property of Crooked Tree Arts Center as outlined in the Letter of Agreement.

Sale event: the Collectors Gala is a ticketed, public event. (A private preview for artists will be held immediately prior.)

  • Artists set the prices. Crooked Tree Arts Center will retain a 40% commission. Minimum retail price: $400.
  • CTAC staff will process sales; checks will be mailed to artists on or before September 30, 2020.
  • Prices are non-negotiable.
  • Selling artwork outside of the Paint Grand Traverse event is discouraged and contrary to the spirit of the event.

  • First place: $2,500 cash
