About the Artist
Based in
Madison, WI

"After graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1981 with a BFA in studio art, I worked in the Architectural profession until 1999, at that time, I began working fulltime as an architectural illustrator. Working primarily in watercolor, project illustration was something I had done throughout my architectural career. During my 15 years as an Illustrator, I am grateful to have been a member of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators and to have received numerous “Awards of Excellence” for my work.  (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 & 2013)  I began painting in Plein Air events in 2014 and was immediately successful in selling my work and winning awards. I have since made the transition to working fulltime as a Plein Air artist."

Artist's Statement

With unlimited subject matter and constantly changing light and weather conditions there is no studio like the outdoors. I have found that painting plein air, with all its challenges, is really the only way to fully experience the beauty of light, color, form and space in the natural world. For me, plein air painting is a way to connect to nature as well as with other artist and patrons. The Plein Air community is really a wonderful group of people.

I have always worked in watercolor when painting outdoors, it is unlike any other media in its potential for variety of application. Virtually any subject matter whether it is a still life or a landscape can become a playground for exploration of the medium. In my mind, watercolor itself has the potential to bring brilliance to any image and the mastery of watercolor painting is to understand the controlled chaos that allows that to happen.
