With unlimited subject matter and constantly changing light and weather conditions there is no studio like the outdoors. I have found that painting plein air, with all its challenges, is really the only way to fully experience the beauty of light, color, form and space in the natural world. For me, plein air painting is a way to connect to nature as well as with other artist and patrons. The Plein Air community is really a wonderful group of people.
I have always worked in watercolor when painting outdoors, it is unlike any other media in its potential for variety of application. Virtually any subject matter whether it is a still life or a landscape can become a playground for exploration of the medium. In my mind, watercolor itself has the potential to bring brilliance to any image and the mastery of watercolor painting is to understand the controlled chaos that allows that to happen.
