Ruth A. Kitchen, an emerging artist, began her art career after teaching social studies and language arts for 31 years. Her preferred mediums for plein air are oil and gouache. For Ruth, each painting offers a new opportunity to capture the beauty and spirit of the landscape. Her style continually evolves as she explores the many elements of art and painting.
The joy and challenge of plein air painting was first experienced when Ruth painted with Andrew Petrov in Provence, France. Plein air workshops in Traverse City with Neil Walling, Sharon Griffes Tarr, Mark Hanson and Margo Burian continued her exploration of outdoor painting. Ruth’s education has included workshops with Charles Gruppe, Ellie Harold, Charles Murphy, Barbara Reich, Bob Rohm, Eric Slayton and Lori Feldpausch.
For the past 3 years, Ruth has organized Plein Air Boot Camp for local artists. Boot camp is a 10-day event of intense painting followed by show-and-tell and critiques. Each year over 20 artists have participated.
Ruth has participated in plein air events throughout the Grand Traverse Region for the past 10 years.
Ruth is affiliated with the Oil Painters of America, Crooked Tree Art Center, Glen Arbor Art Association, Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts, Leelanau Cultural Center, Plein Air Painters of Northwest Michigan, Great Lakes Plein Air Painters, Studio One 6, and the Magic Thursday Artists.
