Valerie Craig has drawn and painted nearly all of her life. Known for her impressionist approach to color and light, Craig is captivated by both urban and rural landscapes. Like most artists, Craig continues to be a student of art, always reaching for a higher level of excellence, while discovering and expressing her own voice.
In 1998, Craig left her career in psychiatric nursing administration to pursue her dream of painting full-time. She feels that her best expressions happen when she is on location and can directly sense the mood and atmosphere of a particular scene. Whether painting vast open areas or intimate spaces, she finds that capturing light and color is best accomplished through close observation and careful study.
Craig paints out of doors whenever she can, Valerie finds great inspiration in her familiar Pennsylvania landscape. Always curious, Valerie searches to uncover new ideas in her home studio as well as setting her easel up along a country road or in the midst of city life. She leads workshops both nationally and internationally.
Valerie lives in Villanova, Pennsylvania with her husband Peter.
I am drawn to quiet spaces, intimate moments and the changeable moods of nature. While the subject captures my attention, it is the shapes and laying on of paint that stir my imagination. I want the viewer to feel that they also participate in my process, so I hope for my work to kindle some sort of emotional response.
