Debra Van Leen
Like many mature artists Debra started her formal art career in graphics and illustration with the expectation of someday returning to creating fine art. She was fortunate to do so in 2002.
She grew up in a home filled with art, music, literature, science, and love, where she was encouraged to explore and reflect on anything and everything. A large personal library, visits to museums, zoos, concerts and plays were a big part of family activities, and influenced her artistic development Her subjects come from nature; landscapes, animals and still life. Recently she has begun and exploration of landscape painting working from life or “en Plein Air”
Debra attended Rocky Mountain School of Art (now RMCAD) in Denver Colorado, where her art education gave her the opportunity to explore many media, but having worked in soft pastel since she was five years old it is her favorite and primary medium for expression.
Debra’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries and art centers, has received awards in local, regional and national competitions, and is held in private and institutional collections in the US and other countries. She has held board positions on several local and regional art associations, and currently serves on the board of the Great Lakes Pastel Society as the newsletter editor.
