As a plein air artist, I work primarily in oil, and seek out subjects that display great light and shadows, color, and appealing shapes. My preference for subject matter is varied and includes interesting structures in historic neighborhoods, colorful alleys, beach and water views.
I describe my style as impressionistic with interpretive and loose brushstrokes. I credit painting en plein air for speeding my artistic development. By painting in natural light on location I feel that this direct observation of color is far more helpful than interpreting the light from photos. When I do paint in the studio I notice the influence from my plein air experience.
One of my favorite artistic pastimes is participating in plein air organizations. I'm a member of the Ohio Plein Air Society, Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, American Impressionist Society, and Athena Art Society of Toledo, Ohio. In addition I hold memberships in several plein air painting groups in Ohio and Florida.
