Justin Shull was born in Newport, New Hampshire in 1982 and currently lives and works in Traverse City, Michigan. Justin received a BA in Studio Art from Dartmouth College and a MFA in Visual Arts from Rutgers. His work has been exhibited and collected nationally, and he has won several awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the College Art Association, and the International Sculpture Center.
Justin finds inspiration in the landscape. He works primarily from observation, either out in the field (en plein air) or in the studio using a variety of media, including acrylics, oils, gouache and digital. Justin aims to make direct, dynamic, and vibrant paintings of the ordinary spaces that we occupy and move through in everyday life. His paintings are as much about the world we make as they are about the world that makes us, and they often feature an interplay between elements of the built environment and the natural world, setting up a conversation between the geometries of our civilization and the organic forces that coexist in a dynamic tension.
