Biography

Mary Hertler Tallman's works in pastel are created as the 19th century French Impressionist painters first described "en plein air".  Her formal training includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts from Spring Arbor University. Her award-winning works are included in gallery exhibitions and on-line, as well as in both private and corporate collections. In 2023, her work is recognized by Pastel Journal Magazine’s “24th Annual Pastel 100 Competition”. In this venue, artists competed internationally to be included in the top 100.  

Further in 2023, she is accepted into the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s “10th Annual Plein Air Festival”.

Previous events, exhibitions and awards include:

  • In 2022, she participated, and exhibited in the “Paint Dexter Plein Air Event” where she was awarded both “Artist’s Choice” by her peers and “Greg LaRock Memorial” award for “Best Body of Works”.  
  • Additionally, she participated in the Inaugural Paint Tawas Plein Air Event where her work was awarded “Third Place”.   Her works have received awards from the Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association “Brush of Fresh Air” receiving an “Honorable Mention”
  • Adirondack Pastel Society into their “8th Annual National Pastel Exhibition” receiving a “Merit Award”.  
  • Her works have also been exhibited in the Piedmont Pastel Society “Member Show 2022”
  • Left Coast Pastel Painters Society “Pastels in Paradise”
  • Maryland Pastel Society “Shades of Pastel”
  • Pastel Society of North Carolina “6th Annual Pure Color”
